about

"As I Weep (Your Feet)" was inspired by an organization called Sole Hope, whose work gave me a tangible picture of what compassion looks like and forever changed the way I relate to God.

When I was 17, I heard a story about children and adults in Uganda who were suffering from conditions caused by a parasite called jiggers. Female jiggers climb onto bare feet, burrow underneath the skin, and lay egg sacks, causing serious infection and crippling pain. Not only is it hard to walk or have a normal life, but individuals who have jiggers are believed to be cursed and are socially ostracized. I saw a video in which the volunteers hosting a medical clinic were washing people’s feet before cutting out the jiggers–a task that could be highly painful yet prevent amputation and even save lives. Somebody shared that sometimes the helpers doing the clinics cried even more than the patients, they identified so much with their pain. Still, they knew this was the only way to healing and wholeness.

Hearing about the tears of the volunteers and about the suffering caused by the jiggers, I had an epiphany. In a sense, lies that shaped the way I saw the world, myself, and Jesus Himself were deeply embedded in my feet and I could barely walk anymore. I felt defeated by depression and stuck in cycles of shame. But here, with tenderness and care, my Maker was offering to humbly wash my wounds and do surgery. He was crying with me. He knew addressing the lies would hurt, but it would also save my life. Others might back away, but God would not.

lyrics

You have lies lodged deep inside
your hurting feet
Let Me wash your wounds
I’ll wash your wounds as I weep
Weep

You, My child, be reconciled
You’re worth so much to Me
Let Me cut in deep
I’ll cut in deep as I weep
Weep

It’s necessary for Me to unbury
the lies that you’ve believed
Yes, it’s necessary for Me to unbury
the lies that you’ve believed

Will you let Me?
Do you want to be made new?
Will you trust Me?
Do you want Me to heal you?

I’ve come to break your bonds
and breathe life into tombs
I’ve come to illuminate the darkness
and heal all your wounds
I’ve come to set the captive free
give the prisoner liberty
I am the Truth, and I have come for you

Do not give up, don’t back away
I’m like a Potter, and you’re the clay
Let Me mold you here
I’ll mold you here with My tears
Tears

You’re afraid of all the pain
that could arise
Let Me give you peace,
I’ll give you peace and wipe away your tears
